Sylvia Galbraith - Bio

Sylvia Galbraith, PhotographerSylvia Galbraith has worked with many art forms over the years, including clay, charcoal, watercolours and oils, but found that the limitations and challenges of photography inspired her more than any other art form. She is now a recognized professional photographer whose work sells worldwide, and even after more than thirty years working as a full time photographer, she has not lost her passion for the medium.  Her experience as a news photographer taught her to work quickly and anticipate fleeting moments and her editorial photographs have been published worldwide.  She supplies stock images for use in publishing or advertising and provides fine art prints for business and individual clients.  As well, she documents work by other artists and works with many well-known painters and sculptors.

Sylvia has taught photography courses throughout Canada, including for the University of Toronto, University of Brandon, MB and Humber College. She currently teaches a popular series of workshops in her studio in downtown Fergus, and is an Associate Faculty Member for Conestoga College in Kitchener, in the Commercial Photography Certificate program.  Many of her workshops draw on her own experiences as a photographer and include topics that appeal to intermediate and advanced photographers.  Information regarding her commercial work and photography classes can be found on her commercial website at: Silver Creek Photography

While still providing commercial photography services, Sylvia has been working on personal projects as well, mainly documentary and landscape.  Her first solo exhibition was held in August 2011 at the Whitestone Gallery in Guelph. Another show, “Main Streets & Memories” was held at the Wellington County Museum & Archives in the spring of 2015, and featured black & white documentary photographs that reference the small town character and people of rural Ontario. New images from this on-going series were featured in a show at the Rotunda Gallery in Kitchener City Hall in 2017.

Sylvia has spent a lot of her time recently in Northern Ontario, Newfoundland and Alberta & BC, areas that include some of the youngest, as well as the oldest geological features on earth..  Her latest series of abstract landscapes links her artistic interpretations of a scene with geological and historical events that shaped the landscape in remote locations.  In 2016 she was a recipient of the Georgian Bay Land Trust – King Family Bursary, which allowed her to spend time photographing off-shore islands along the eastern side of Georgian Bay.  She was also selected to participate in a residency at the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity in September 2017.

In addition to working as a photographer, Sylvia volunteers on a regular basis within the arts community.  She served a two-year term on the Board of Directors for the Elora Centre for the Arts, in Elora ON, from 2011 to 2013. She is a member of The Elora Arts Council, The Guelph Arts Council, and is a member artist with Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography in Toronto.  She also coordinates and installs art exhibitions for the Waterloo Law Association at the Waterloo County Courthouse.
