Four Sunsets, Catalina (Through A Pinhole)

Archival pigment print on Canson baryta paper.

16 x 16″, unframed

Outside views, as seen through the pinhole of a camera obscura room.

“Camera obscura” translates literally to “dark room”.  This series comprises images created by turning a house or building into a camera by blocking all light entering a space except for a tiny hole.  The outside scene enters the room, wandering across the walls and ceiling in real time.  By photographing this view with a conventional camera, the scene is recorded and replicated in a print, essentially combining the basic concept of light entering a space with modern image making methods.  The overlapping views address the notion of within/without, terms that are inseparable in the minds of people living in remote communities where these images were created.
